Simo Häyhä was born in the small town of Rautjärvi, located on the Karelian Isthmus near the border with the Soviet Union (state 1920–1940). He entered military service in 1925; for his excellent marksmanship (he was an avid hunter) he was assigned the role of sniper, considered a strictly selective post in the Finnish armed forces. Finnish snipers were elite on a global scale. Simo Häyha was the best sniper despite his small height.
