CZ BREN 2 – the Czech answer to modern rifles

How it all started

Back in 2010, the first generation – the CZ 805 BREN – entered Czech Army service. It was a big deal, but soon soldiers noticed it was too heavy and not as user-friendly as hoped. So, in 2015, the CZ BREN 2 was unveiled. The Ministry of Defence quickly ordered 2,600 rifles, and within a year, the weapon was in service.

What changed

Weight went down, all controls became fully ambidextrous, the stock is folding and adjustable, and field stripping is much simpler.

Variants and calibers

The Army mainly uses 5.56×45 NATO, but the 7.62×39 version is very popular too. For those who want more punch, there’s the BREN 2 BR chambered in 7.62×51 NATO. The civilian version is called BREN 2 Ms.

From Uherský Brod to elite forces

The French GIGN adopted it in 2017, and Hungary even launched licensed production for its armed forces.

My experience

On the range, it’s predictable and easy to handle. Recoil is manageable, controls are intuitive, and the build quality is top-notch. Plus, the modularity means you can switch setups without hassle.

Conclusion

For me, the CZ BREN 2 is exactly what a modern service rifle should be – lightweight, modular, reliable.
